Usually I'm a drakekeepers/KUGS guy. Whirl, it does. This thing has quite possibly the most unexpectedly interesting moveset I've seen in that, weirdly enough, it's one handed running R1 spin attack is the same exact move as it's R2. Now, one might say 'well that's kind of a waste of a move slot, why do you need two of the same move on a weapon?'

You can essentially perform two running attacks in a row without appearing to start up the second, because it's actually the native R2. Both fully aimable and spin in a 360 degree angle all around you.

If you watch your opponent and do it right, at least one of them WILL hit. Getting both to hit is woeful to their health bar. Don't be abusive of this move though, as you could get parried if someone were to wise up to it.

Essentialy, you do the running one handed attack to try and hit but really expecting not to, the aim is to get them hit by the second one. During/after the running attack, watch them carefully.

If they choose to approach/attack you after you 'missed' or hit them, immediately do the R2 for a second 'running attack' spinning around and clocking them right in the face. Probably the best anti backstab move I can think of in the game. They never EVER expect it, (from a 'big dum slow weapon' no less!) and then they become agitated. I attribute their reaction to being told this hard to that of a child who has just dropped their ice cream.

They now want to slap yours out of your hand. No one must have ice cream. The samson option is go. They're right infront of you, they're mad, and they're going to spam now that they consider you out of most if not all your stamina and open to counter attack. You then proceed to take a big lick of your ice cream, as you perform another r2, a followup pancake move right after this that has massive hyper armour (I've taken 2 rapier pokes while continuing with the pancake, I have never been stopped from performing this IF timed right). Offhand an estoc in combo for great effect, I've found as both weapon's r2's can cover a wide area on either side of you.

Interestingly, it has the same weight and stat requirements as Havel's Greatshield, both big heavy instruments adorned in chains. I've been quick swapping between havels shield and the hammer in my main hand because of this for some great shield slam attack and turtle shenanigans. The two weapons are like brothers. I don't see anyone using it, interested to see if there are any other fans out there?

Isn't that the case with all great hammers, or at least most? I think Gyrm's has one of the shortest reaches of great hammers, so it might not be the best for that sort of strategy. However, according to fextralife, it has some pretty powerful 2h moves, trading off pancaking for hard hitting spins.

So that's nice. EDIT: Sadly, I don't have all of the great hammers on the toon I'm on right now, but I can tell you that the Demon's Great Hammer has a similar ability. 6 lbs heavier and a greater stat investment, but a higher AR. A lot of the other great hammers I checked have a spinning 1h R1, but a horizontal swing with a 1H R2. So the Demon's Greathammer has the same r2 move identical to the running spin? That's cool, but the weapon itself being too heavy kinda defeats that purpose for me, I think it uses more stamina too. I feel like the gyrm hammer is a better balance of weight for damage, the fact that I can use it with my current armour and VIT setup and still move well is nice, I usually have to sacrifice a chunk of poise and defence if I move to the heavy heavy stuff.

Having it and havels shield being identical in requirements makes it a no brainer too for switching, I don't need to worry about more or less weight and my roll distance being different. Sounds like he's a bit too overzealous with the combo. I only do the pancake if they've clearly gone in to attack me in which case I spin and aim it right for them wherever they move to.

A few times I've gotten ahead of myself predicting them and just went ahead and spammed r2 and had myself backstabbed though. All in all, a fun as shit weapon. In my opinion, if you're doing a greathammer build, broad sword or estoc are great pairs for them because they scale in STR nicely and have nice fast mixups for the big smashy side of the build. Cooler still is since you'll have at least 45 STR for the anvil anyway, swapping the anvil out for havels shield (because they share weight/requirements) + broadsword is basically free to use and a disgusting combo on the build. Havel's shield may as well be a greatclub, with it's insane jumping attacks. It's a greatclub that also happens to be the best shield in the game.

I right hand the thing and fast swap between it and the anvil constantly.
