Mar 21, 2007 Hello to all! I want to start an inventory cycle count program in my company. How can Excel be used to do random selection? The only data I currently.
My comapny has just sent me thru Six Sigma Green Belt training and now expect me to immediately save them millions. For my first project I have been given the task to start a cycle count program. There has not been one in place before, just a yearly inventory.
I know the general idea of a cycle count process, but as far as tracking I’m pretty much in the dark. I don’t even know if Six Sigma has the answer or if I should just make up some system in Excel on my own. Any input would be greatly appreciated. – seems that your management should have had some preparation before embarking on this endeavor. Conducting a cycle count program is implementing a solution before defining the problem.

Your GB training should have provided you the framework around how to approach a problem. You need to first educate your mgmt on the DMAIC process and how to first formulate a problem statement and set up a project charter. If the cycle count program is so obvious that it is the right approach, then you don’t need the DMAIC process, this is a “just go do it” situation.
Find something else to apply your SS training to solve. Yes they should have and I have defined the problem with the inventory. I have set up a DMAIC Team Charter and the cycle count is under open issues. The plan was to just have the warehouse people just go start counting, but I thought somebody might have been in the same boat and could guide me during this start up. I have no idea what you are talking about. The question was on cycle counting.
Yes I have set up DMAIC and the cycle count is an improvement. I have that part figured out, I just needed to know if anyone had any experience on beginning a cycle count program. I will attempt again. It’s not always easy via blog posting but and I are saying is “What problem are you trying to solve”. Is too much inventory the problem or is missing inventory items the problem? We are just saying you can go ahead and design a cycle count process but will that solve the problem?
If you follow the DMAIC process, you may find out something else is causing the problem like another process that’s broken (e.g. Damaged goods not being accounted for properly, computer systems not updated properly, etc.).
I’d suggest you define the problem and get data or else how will you know how often to do a cycle count? Is weekly too frequent, is monthly too much, or is quarterly acceptable? Cycle counts are laborious and don’t “save money”, they just keep the accounting books from surprises but the inventory is still typically lost.rarely does it build on an unplanned basis.
I’m actually in the same boat, with the exception that I have not received any formal training or six sigma classes. I’ve been tasked with implementing a cycle count program right out of the gate. I’ve been simply using excel to formulate my cycle counts by value rather than movement. Any recommendations on this? I’m running into walls with our raw material inventory.

There is an abundant amount of items, constantly changing in value. I’m not sure if excel is the right choice or should I turn to a specific type of software?
